I am sure all of you are as happy to see March as I am! March is the first sign that spring and better weather is right around the corner.

At CIESC, we continue to focus on our strategic plan and how we can best continue to serve our students, educators, districts, and communities.

Areas of Focus

Two areas of particular emphasis are how to best serve and support school districts with the new Indiana high school graduation requirements as well as supporting district understanding and utilization of artificial intelligence.

New Indiana High School Graduation Requirements

A significant aspect of the new Indiana graduation requirements involves helping students earn an enrollment, employment, and/or enlistment seal. One requirement for a student to earn a seal is for the student to complete a specific number of work-based learning hours. These hours are essential for the employment honors seal as well as for the enrollment, employment, and enlistment and service honors plus seals.

Two challenges school districts face with this requirement is to coordinate work-based learning opportunities for students with regional employers, non-profits, etc. as well as accurately and easily track a student’s work-based learning hours.

At CIESC, we have created an Indiana Career Collaborative team and are developing a process for assisting districts in both of these areas. From a coordination perspective, CIESC has begun to establish relationships with county-wide intermediaries who will become vital in recruiting and coordinating partnership agreements with businesses and non-profits in their respective counties. CIESC is also looking at establishing a technology platform that will not only be a one-stop shop for school districts to connect with business and non-profit work-based learning opportunities, but will also provide a platform for student work-based learning data to be tracked to help school counselors more easily determine whether a student has completed the appropriate number of work-based learning hours to earn an honors and/or honor plus seal.

CIESC’s Indiana Career Collaborative team is working on finalizing the process and the technology platform for a more comprehensive release of the program by the end of this school year.

Utilization of Artificial Intelligence

In terms of artificial intelligence, Dr. Christy Hilton, CIESC’s Associate Executive Director, is coordinating an effort with other CIESC departmental leaders to enhance its current artificial intelligence professional development support to include how we can best help districts in utilizing artificial intelligence to enhance the operational aspects of their districts.

Over the course of the next several months, research will be conducted and a professional development plan will be designed and communicated to school districts. We believe artificial intelligence can be effectively used by teachers in the classroom, but also can be a great tool for districts to use operationally to improve efficiencies.

Spring is a time for new beginnings, and over the next several months, we are looking forward to growing both our Indiana Career Collaborative and artificial intelligence services to help districts flourish.
